1. Start Somewhere

Typically I like to start in the worst rooms in the house and work from there. This generally means I start in the living room and kitchen, and then expand my cleaning range outward to other rooms in the house.

2. Bag Up Your Trash and Recyclables

Grab a fistful of trash bag and start plowing trash into them. Try to separate out your recyclables from your trash and keep them in separate bags. Then what do you do? If you had a big enough party you may have more trash than can fit in your curbside collection. 3. Tackle the Dishes

5. Suck it Up and Vacuum

That rug really ties the room together and everyone at your party loved it, which is why they kept stepping on it. No worries. You’re an adult and this is why adults own vacuums. And then you’re done. Hopefully. The attack of the invisible party monster beaten back until the next three day weekend and the next party.

On Monday Abengoa said it plans to build a $110 million factory in Glendale that will turn city garbage into electricity. Chicago-based power company Vieste Energy will own the planned factory, and Abengoa will build it and run it for 30 years. Construction will take 20 months, and create 50 jobs, says Abengoa. When fully built, the factory is supposed to be able to gasify 180,000 tons of garbage per year, produce 350 tons of gas per day, and create 15 MW of electricity.

This type of factory planned for Glendale gasifies many types of waste, not just organic waste, but also plastics. In contrast, other biogas plants built sporadically around the U.S. — most commonly at landfills and water treatment facilities — put organic waste into bioreactors, which captures the gas that is produced as the organic materials decompose.

In our on going search for renewable energy we often forget about the one renewable resource that will never go away: garbage. We often equate burning garbage with the nasty noxious smogs that haunted the streets of 19th Century industrialized cities. But garbage burned for energy today meets strict emissions standards so garbage into energy may be a piece of our future’s renewable energy puzzle.

When it comes to reducing our trash we should all think small. In my case, I looked in the bathroom and then looked in the mirror. I found one small thing I could change that would reduce my yearly expenses and cut my yearly trash output out drastically. Razors.

Yup.

I said, razors.

Like everyone else I know I shaved with those super-expensive disposable razor blades. I’d go through about four to five a month. I’d also burn through a can of shaving cream every five weeks. Think about the amount of trash that generates per year. Then think about how much trash that generates over ten or twenty years. Plastic housings, dull metal, and dozens of aerosol cans. And all of it completely unnecessary. 

Men have been shaving for thousands of years (unless those busts of the Emperors were wrong, they weren’t a lot of scruffy Romans running around) and up until fifty years ago we shaved in a way that didn’t generate 100s of plastic cartridges in the garbage every year. Turns out all you need for a good shave is a sharp blade, a nice brush, and lathering soap. 

This desire to stop consuming convenience and instead return to traditional ways made me seek out the art of the wet shave. I dumped my disposable razor and took up a safety razor instead. I said goodbye to my aerosol propelled shaving gels in favor of a badger brush and a lathering shave soap.

The problem is not unique to Oslo, a city of 1.4 million people. Across Northern Europe, where the practice of burning garbage to generate heat and electricity has exploded in recent decades, demand for trash far outstrips supply. “Northern Europe has a huge generating capacity,” said Mr. Mikkelsen, 50, a mechanical engineer who for the last year has been the managing director of Oslo’s waste-to-energy agency.

Burning garbage for energy hasn’t caught on in the United States, and with the rise of solar and wind power, probably won’t ever catch on as a viable alternate energy source, but the United States may soon be providing Northern Europe’s energy in the form of burnable garbage.

Firefighters battled smoke and flames at an abandoned store front late Thursday night in Homewood.

The fire was reported at a building on Frankstown Avenue about 11:30 p.m.

Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Cook said garbage and other junk inside the building made it difficult for crews to extinguish the flames.

“It looked like hoarding conditions, therefore we kept all the firefighters out and attacked the fire from the outside,” Cook said.

The average American office worker uses about 500 disposable cups every year.

 

Every year, Americans throw away enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times.

 

During 2009’s International Coastal Cleanup, the Ocean Conservancy found that plastic bags were the second-most common kind of waste found, at 1 out of ten items picked up and tallied.

 

Over 7 billion pounds of PVC are thrown away in the U.S. each year. Only 18 million pounds of that, about one quarter of 1 percent, is recycled.

 

Chlorine production for PVC uses almost as much energy as the annual output of eight medium-sized nuclear power plants each year.

 

The state of California spends about 25 million dollars sending plastic bags to landfill each year, and another 8.5 million dollars to remove littered bags from streets.

 

Every year, Americans use approximately 1 billion shopping bags, creating 300,000 tons of landfill waste.

 

Plastic bags do not biodegrade. Light breaks them down into smaller and smaller particles that contaminate the soil and water and are expensive and difficult to remove.⁶

 

Less than 1 percent of plastic bags are recycled each year. Recycling one ton of plastic bags costs $4,000. The recycled product can be sold for $32.⁶

 

When the small particles from photodegraded plastic bags get into the water, they are ingested by filter feeding marine animals. Biotoxins like PCBs that are in the particles are then passed up the food chain, including up to humans.

In 2008, Paper and paperboard made up 31% of municipal waste. Plastics were 12%.

 

In 2008, only 23.1% of glass disposed of was recycled, and only 7.1% of plastics and 21.1% of aluminum.

 

About 31% of MSW generated in the US in 2008 was containers and packaging, or 76,760 thousand tons. Only 43.7% of that was recycled.

 

In 2008, the average amount of waste generated by each person in America per day was 4.5 pounds. 1.1 pounds of that was recycled, and .4 pounds, including yard waste, was sent to composting. In total, 24.3% of waste was recycled, 8.9% was composted, and 66.8% was sent to a landfill or incinerated. 

 

The average American employee consumes 2.5 cans of soda each day at work.

 

The beverage industry used 46 percent less packaging in 2006 than in 1990, even with a 24 percent increase in beverage sales in that time.
